At the end of March 2001 CSKX Studios lost its space at Zero Goodsway, King's Cross, due to the impending redevelopment of the area to make way for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. CSKX has yet to find a suitable re-location and because of the nature of the current property climate, this has so far proved impossible. The only possibility at present is to move further out of London, which, because all the members live in North London around Camden, this is of no interest.

CSKX was formed in 1990 by artist Leo and a friend after leaving Angel Studios in Islington. Originally looking for a small cheap space, a building was found creating potentially seven studio spaces. During the last 11 years the studios housed artists, craft makers, designers, a film maker, a writer and a theatre companies office. At the end of this term there were eight artists (painters, sculptors, photography, installation, electronic media) and a shoe designer. Within this area of London it was, and still is, extremely difficult to find reasonably priced artists studios, CSKX was one of the few studios offering affordable spaces in Camden.

The CSKX site was originally built for the Coal Board toward the end of the 19thC. Since the sixties it had a number of occupants and uses. Although very basic, as is the nature of artists studios, it did retain many original characteristics, and sitting amongst the gas works on Goodsway at Kings Cross, an area which had (until summer 2001) changed little during its existence, there was something noticeably special about the building. To extend the use and bring attention to this space and its environment, we continued to organise occasional exhibitions and events to make the space open to a wider audience, presenting a variety of work from installation, video and painting to live music and dance performance.

CSKX was originally formed to create affordable studios and always functioned as a non profit making organisation. Rental and running costs were divided between the studios and the exhibitions and events were funded by those involved with CSKX and the artists involved with each particular project. In January 1998 CSKX was granted Charity Status. After receiving Charity Status it was our intention to be able to secure funding and support from outside of CSKX for art events, including in this a provision for payments of fees to the artists and those who work on the projects. This was particularly successful with the Projection Project; funding was raised to enable the running of a public art event for the last year on Goodsway, using slide projectors to light the first floor windows with specially created works by twelve international artists.

As mentioned at the beginning CSKX at present does not have a building. We continue to look and are currently considering working together with another artists organisation to find a space. We are also considering other ways of working, again influenced by the current social and economic climate we find ourselves in. Ways of working; enabling ourselves to work in the way we would like to and in situations we would like to find ourselves in.
