House no Garden project

2 - 26 November 1995

Karl Blossfeldt, Monica Bonvicini, Nicky Hirst, LEO, Sebastian Lowsley-Williams, Claudia Schmacke, Gregor Schneider, Terry Smith.

The House no Garden project comprises 8 artists from Germany and the UK. The artists have been brought together through their works relationship to architecture and the interior building space. Invited to produce work directly in response to or install work in relation to CSKX, the artists are presenting pieces in juxtaposition to the place and interacting directly with the existing structures, materials and fittings.

There is a sense of the work growing out of or dissolving into the walls and floors. What is 'original', what is being installed, and the boundaries between are extremely elusive.

It has been a concern of artists for some years to work in response to the exhibition space, whether existing or 'found' space, which would allow for some interplay between a buildings character, its history and the artists working practice. CSKX was originally built for the Coal Board toward the end of the 19th Century, its function was the administration and distribution of coal delivered to King's Cross, the building retains many of its original characteristics. It is this character that the artists have responded to.
